National Roadshow

The National Roadshow is an important element of Scottish Youth Theatre's annual programme of activities.  For six weeks in the autumn, the National Roadshow visits a wide variety of groups all across Scotland. Our team of tutors deliver a free workshop to 12-21 years followed by a chat about how to get involved in youth theatre at a local and national level to secondary schools, after school care clubs, amateur dramatic clubs, support for learning units, community groups, youth theatres and many more.

Workshop options are as follows:

  • Theatre Games and Improvisation (2 hours)
Using fast paced games & exercises, the group can learn basic drama skills and techniques within a fun, relaxed and creative environment. Focus is on building groupwork skills and developing confidence. This workshop is suitable for both beginners and advanced level as Scottish Youth Theatre will tailor workshops to your group’s level.
  • The Power of the Ensemble (2 hours)
Developing vital groupwork skills as an ensemble performer the young people will devise their own work incorporating movement and voice. This is a chance to experience the exciting potential for performing as an ensemble.
  • Page to Stage (2 hours)
Using theatrical exercises and techniques the participants will investigate their understanding of the text and how this translates into performance, exploring ideas for staging, characterisation and direction.
Choose from Shakespeare's ‘Hamlet’, ‘Merchant of Venice’ or ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ or contemporary texts from a selection of specially commissioned Scottish Youth Theatre plays.
  • Practical Approach to Shakespeare (2 hours)
Using tried and tested techniques, the group will break down the barriers of Shakespeare’s language by focusing on physicality and voice. The workshop will develop confidence in using Shakespearian language, gaining a fuller understanding of the language used and character motivations.
  • Special Educational Needs (duration depends on needs of the group)
Within the headline SEN we offer all of the options listed above, catering to individual group skill levels, abilities and needs. If this tailor-made workshop is of interest to you and your group then please let us know.
  • Responsible Citizen (2 hours)                                                                            Imagination, enthusiasm and a desire to live in a place you are proud to call home will allow you to create scenes that if came true would make a positive change in your life. Creatively exploring the potential of each individual to make a small positive change and how all these changes together could have the potential for local, national and even global impact.
